Rangeview Seeds :: ORNAMENTALS SEEDS :: SILVER WATTLE

 SILVER WATTLE

SILVER WATTLE
This beautiful, fast gtowing, medium sized tree is one of the most beautiful you can see and yet at the same time it is one of the most useful trees you can have too. It is an erect acacis that can reach 10-15 m in height and when grown close together can maintain a very straight barrel relulting in timber suitable for milling. When grown in isolation it maintains a spreading style and rarely grows over 7 metres. It produces very showy clusters of rich golden flower balls which are very important to bees for the pollen these flowers produce. The masses of flowers are soon follwerd by a display of rich mahogany red pods laden with the edible seed which is fast becoming recognised as a gourmet flour rich in protein. When still young the tree takes pruning in its stride and will develope quite a lovely bushy style.
Probably one of the most important uses of this tree is its ability to fix nitrogen from the air into nodules in its roots. The leaves are formed like feathers and hold water in drops on the outspread horizontal leaves and sparkling like jewels in the moonlight or the next available sunlight.
Seed should be scarified by placing in a jar lined with a sheet of rough emery paper and roughly rolled atound the jar. Then fill the jar with boiling water and leave to soak overnight. Plant the seeds shallowly in a rich slightly acidic seedraising mix and keep damp until they are ready to prick out into pots. Plant into the garden or field at about 60cm and protect from browsing animals until well established.
Seeds can be sown at any time but do best when planted in spring
The flowers of this tree are the Australian Floral Emblem
