CORIANDER - SLOW BOLT (Coriandum sativum)
This variety has been selected for late maturity
making it slow to go to seed. It is preferred by those
who want a long period of leaf production.
Coriander grows to 50 cm. The leaves are variable
in shape. All parts of the plant are edible.but the fresh
leaves and the dried seeds are the parts most
commonly used in cooking. Coriander roots have a
deeper, more intense flavour than the leaves. They
are used in a variety of Asian dishes. Coriander
like many spices, contains antioxidants which can
delay or prevent the spoilage of food seasoned with
this spice. Chemicals derived from coriander leaves
were found to have antibacterial activity against
salmonella and juice from the plant has been
traditionally used to combat acne. It has been
documented as a traditional treatment for diabetes.
Direct sow the seed in spring, summer or early
autumn and space the plants about 20cm apart.
Heat and long days will cause the plant to go to
seed more quickly, so if you are growing for the
leaves, try growing when the conditions are milder
and not so hot.
Also known as chinese parsley, this very quick growing, bright green annual reaches a height of approx. 50cm. Leaves on the lower part of the stem are oval with serrated edges, but as they mature, the outside branches become feathery and are divided into narrow segments. The small flowers are white to light pink and are bourne in short-stalked clusters in summer. The spherical seeds are brownish yellow in colour.
Coriander likes hot, dry climates resembling those of the eastern mediterranean region and southern europe, but will grow in cool, warm and tropical areas. Prefers full sun, though in tropical environments, does enjoy some afternoon shade. Successive sowing of seeds several weeks apart will extend the cropping period.
Leaves, seeds and roots are used for culinary purposes, especially in asian cuisine.
